Heatwave alert: Hot weather trends have 'accelerated' in past 70 years – climate study

On a global average, cumulative heat is accelerating at a rate of about 1C to 4.5C per decade.

Lead author Dr Sarah Perkins Kirkpatrick from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes said: “Not only have we seen more and longer heatwaves worldwide over the past 70 years, but this trend has markedly accelerated.

“Cumulative heat shows a similar acceleration, increasing globally by 1C to 4.5C each decade but in some places, like the Middle East, and parts of Africa and South America, the trend is up to 10C a decade.”

The only metric that has not seen an acceleration is heatwave intensity.

Heatwave intensity measures the average temperature across heatwaves.
