Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang delivers ultimatum as contract talks continue

Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang reportedly wants a new contract worth around £250,000-a-week to stay at the club.

Once again, the Gunners find themselves scrambling to keep hold of a star player at the Emirates.

After contract sagas with Robin van Persie, Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey in recent years, Aubameyang is the latest player to put Arsenal in a tricky situation.

The Gabon international has a year left on his contract and recently turned 31.

Aubameyang has just two major honours to his name – the French League Cup (2013) and the German Cup (2017) – and his chances of adding to his collection at Arsenal appear to be difficult given their decline over the years.

However, Aubameyang showed just how valuable he is to Arsenal with two goals on Wednesday to take his goal record to 51 in 79 league games.

According to ESPN, Aubameyang is prepared to stay at Arsenal but wants a three-year deal with around £250,000-a-week in wages.

His request is around £100,000 short of the reported salary of Arsenal’s highest-paid player Mesut Ozil.

If Arsenal and Aubameyang fail to reach an agreement, the club could be forced to sell him in a bid to recoup some money for one of Europe’s most prolific strikers.

Speaking in his press conference ahead of Saturday’s away trip to Wolves, Arteta explained why he feeling positive about Arsenal’s prospects of keeping hold of their star man.

“I don’t know, it is the way that I feel!” Arteta said.

“The way that I communicate with him, the conversations that I have with him and the people around him. It is the energy I sense.

“It is just my opinion, things change in football very quickly but when you ask me in that moment how I feel about Auba’s future, in this moment I feel that he wants to continue with us and keep developing and help us to become a better team.

“He needs to feel he belongs somewhere that he believes we can achieve the goals that he has individually and collectively for a long time.

“He is very settled in the city, his family are really happy here as well I think, and he is loved, respected and admired by his team-mates, which is a huge thing to have at any football club.

“So that’s what gives me positivity, as well because I see the enjoyment he is having, the work-rate that he puts in all the time, and the decisions that he makes every time. So that is where my feelings are coming from.”
