Winds of Winter update: Has George RR Martin made NEW promise to fans?

George RR Martin has been forced to isolate ‘in the mountains’ for some time thanks to COVID-19. However, this time has given him some much-needed solitude to get writing his latest book, The Winds of Winter. In a new post on his website, Not A Blog, Martin has made a new promise to fans about his progress.

This year, Martin was expected to attend WorldCon in New Zealand, also known as CoNZealand.

The writer was to be the Master of Ceremonies, and even promised to unveil his latest book, The Winds of Winter.

In fact, he even said he could be ‘imprisoned’ if the book isn’t ready, saying: “If I don’t have THE WINDS OF WINTER in hand when I arrive in New Zealand for Worldcon 2020, you have here my formal written permission to imprison me in a small cabin on White Island, overlooking that lake of sulfuric acid, until I’m done.

“Just so long as the acrid fumes do not screw up my old DOS word processor, I’ll be fine.”

DON’T MISS

However, sadly WorldCon is not happening in its usual way this year, and instead, it will be a virtual CoNZealand, which Martin is very excited for.

In a new blog post where he shared his excitement for the usual WorldCon, where he sees people in such a way as a ‘family reunion,’ he also explained how this would not distract him from his writing work, and promised fans he would keep on writing.

He said: “And before anyone starts to panic, ‘Oh my god he is making videos in place of writing,’ OF COURSE I am still working on WINDS OF WINTER as well.

“That really should go without saying, yet somehow I need to say it, or someone might make stupid assumptions.”

Fans will breathe a sigh of relief about this, as he has asserted once more he is still writing the book, though he explained how he is also doing some other big projects.

These include editing three new Wild Cards books, reading scripts and notating them for ‘Hollywood projects’ before he listed some more mundane activities.

He added: “Just because I do not mention it in every Not A Blog does not mean it is not happening.”

Of course, the mention of ‘Hollywood projects’ is pretty exciting, as many have suspected Martin may be making a Game of Thrones movie, or further prequel series.

Fans already know writing for the new House of Dragon series is well underway, though Martin has promised he would not touch pen to paper on it until he has written The Winds of Winter.

He said of this back in June: “Hollywood has slowed to a crawl thanks to the pandemic, but THE HOUSE OF THE DRAGON is still flying along wonderfully, thanks to Ryan Condal and his writers, and the tireless Ti Mikkel…

“We have feature films in development adapted from my stories Sandkings and The Ice Dragon and The Lost Lands, television shows in development based on works by Roger Zelazny and Tony Hillerman, there are the secret shorts we’re doing that… well, no, if I spilled that, it wouldn’t be secret.”

While he has not mentioned a Game of Thrones film, clearly there are movies in the pipeline which fans can get excited for before the arrival of The Winds of Winter.

And, with the TV series also underway, there will be plenty of GoT content for fans to enjoy.
