What hair cut should I get?: Best hair cut for your face shape

We all tend to stick to one haircut because we simply don’t know what else to ask for. Before you ask your hairdresser for ‘the usual’ at your next appointment, why not try something new? Express.co.uk spoke to Fudge Professional Brand Ambassador and Celebrity Hair Stylist, Jonathan Andrew to find out the best hair cut for your face shape.

Jonathan said: “Lots of clients will be rushing to get to their stylists this weekend for their much missed style, a fix of something that might have gone wrong, or maybe a whole new look!

“Stylists like me are desperate to get back to their craft. This will be a great time to try out something new and get creative, but in preparation for the consultation it’s good to have an idea about what you fancy and what will suit your face shape.”

Not sure what face shape you have? Most people have one of six shapes.

Sit in front of a mirror face on and draw around the shape of your face with an old lipstick or a wipeable marker. This will give you a visual indication of what face shape you have.

Jonathan has given some examples of what cut works with what shape.

Long

Long faces, also known as oblong shaped faces, are what they say on the tin.

The most flattering styles will make your face appear a little shorter than it is, apparently.

Sarah Jessica Parker is a brilliant example because SJP’s hair always looks fabulous.

Jonathan said: “For this face shape, adding some width and shape balances everything out better.

“This shape loves fringes, so try a soft fringe if you are going for a shorter cut. I love the longer “grown out” fringe here.

“For short hair opt for something more side sweeping with the parting and fringe.

“Great looks here have lots of texture. Shoulder length messy bobs and longer layers are great when mixed with beachy waves.”

Square

A square face sounds quite harsh, but it means you were blessed with a sharp jawline.

The sides of your face are straight, and your jaw line is slightly angled with a minimal curve.

Your face is nearly as wide as it is long, and your features are sharp and angular.

Celebs with this face shape include Angelina Jolie, Cameron Diaz, and Sandra Bollock.

Jonathan said: “We want to soften what is quite a strong face shape.

“I find this is the perfect shape to define features and bring in a focal point.

“My go to here to start is always moving towards a side parting as it brings out the cheek bone and softens the rest.

“Short layered bobs are great here with the side part, try a shorter sweeping fringe too as this is a great look.

“For longer hair, I like things to seem light and have lots of movement.

“Pair this with a longer side fringe to give a focal point to the front.”

Heart

If your chin is pointed like the tip of a heart and your forehead is the widest part of your face, you have a heart-shaped face.

Reese Witherspoon, Cheryl Cole, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Naomi Campbell all have heart-shaped faces.

Jonathan said: “This face shape can take a lot of different cuts and styles.

“Keep things sleeker and smoother through the top to avoid adding width.

“Focus on adding layers through the bottom on longer hair and style with waves and curls.

“For shorter hair, aim for pixie lengths styles that focus the length and weight more towards one side to soften and draw focus.”

Diamond

If you drew lines connecting your hairline to your cheekbones and down your chin, you would be left with a diamond shape.

Your chin is pointed and you have high cheekbones, but your hairline is narrower than a heart-shaped face.

J-LO, Megan Fox, and Rihanna have diamond shaped faces.

Jonathan said: “For this I tend to stay mid-length to longer hair with a strong side parting and finish with tousled waves.

“If you want to balance and widen the jawline, chin length structured bobs can work well and are doing enough to have more versatile styling options.”
