This is the UK's 'favourite' supermarket – do you do your weekly shop here?

Supermarkets have had a hectic few months due to the coronavirus, with some calling them the fourth frontline service as stores worked to feed the nation. But one supermarket had some good news this week as it was dubbed the public’s favourite. Aldi scooped the award for Favourite Supermarket in this year’s Good Housekeeping Food Awards.

The annual awards are in their fifteenth year, and it’s the second consecutive year that the budget supermarket has taken the title for the nation’s favourite.

The retailer not only took the crown as top of the shops, but it scored a hat trick as it received two other awards this year.

Aldi was named Favourite Wine Retailer and Favourite Premium Supermarket Range, for its Specially Selected brand – making it a record win for the supermarket.

The prestigious awards celebrate the best brands and products in the food industry, with readers being asked to vote across 19 different categories.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of National Buying at Aldi, said: “We’re delighted to have picked up an incredible three trophies at the 2020 Good Housekeeping Food Awards.

“Being voted the UK’s Favourite Supermarket and Favourite Wine Retailer for the second consecutive year is a real testament to the hard work we put in to provide our customers.

“We are also very proud that Specially Selected was named readers’ Favourite Premium Supermarket Range.

“Above everything, we are committed to providing customers with high quality products at amazing prices and it’s great to see that the customers agree.”

The Good Housekeeping team also noted that the supermarket had the most winning products in its BBQ taste test earlier this year, while last year, it came joint first for best ham in the Christmas taste test as well as winning in the Christmas pudding with a twist category.

Waitrose was the runner-up in the award for Favourite Supermarket, while Tesco was the runner-up for the Best Wine Retailer award.

Other brands that scored the top spots were Nando’s, who won Favourite High-Street Restaurant Chain, and Yorkshire Tea who pipped PG Tips to the post as the nation’s favourite tea.

Other highlights include Ben & Jerry’s who won Best Ice Cream Brand and Nescafé who took home the award for Favourite Coffee Brand.

However, two other supermarkets scored highly for their online services. Tesco won the award for Favourite Online Grocery Service, while Asda was the runner-up.

The Good Housekeeping team noted: “It’s been a challenging period for online delivery services during lockdown with supermarkets and their employees under more pressure than ever to fulfil orders. This year, Tesco was voted your Favourite Online Grocer Service.”

The awards allow readers to vote based on everything from prices and range to aesthetic, experience and customer service.
