Joel Schumacher dead: The Lost Boys and Batman director dies aged 80

Renowned film director Joel Schumacher has died at the age of 80.

The filmmaker died on Monday morning in New York City after battling cancer for a year, according to Variety.

He was best known for directing hit films including The Lost Boys and St. Elmo’s Fire.

Joel went on to take over from Tim Burton as director of the Batman franchise.

He worked with Val Kilmer, Jim Carey and Nicole Kidman on Batman Forever, which was released in 1995 and grossed more than $300million worldwide.

Joel then directed Batman & Robin in 1997 starring George Clooney in the lead role and Arnold Schwarzenegger starring as the film’s villain Mr Freeze.

His first big break into directing was in the sci-fi comedy The Incredible Shrinking Woman in 1981, which received positive reviews. 

However, Joel rose to fame with his work on hit movies St. Elmo’s Fire, The Lost Boys, and Flatliners.
