Jurgen Klopp backs Liverpool transfer plan despite missing out on Timo Werner to Chelsea

Chelsea’s swoop for star German striker Timo Werner last week ended hopes he might move to Liverpool, for whom the prolific goal-scorer was a long-term transfer target. The champions elect declined to match the required £48million fee and manager Jurgen Klopp yesterday gave strong public backing to Liverpool’s current cautious approach to big money signings.

“It depends what is you club policy and what you want to do,” said Klopp.

“In this moment Chelsea are pretty much on the front foot in the transfer market, but no-one else did anything so far because the times are uncertain.

“We don’t know what will happen; you cannot expect everything will be all fine again for the next season.

“So I think it’s a good time wait a little bit. It’s like you live in a good flat and you want to buy a house. I don’t think this is a good time to buy the house.

“You would think let’s wait and see how the situation develops and buy the house when I know exactly what my future will be.

“And that’s like in a football club as well; we are not the in the most beautiful flat ever — but it’s good.

“We should not forget that, and if the situation stays uncertain we have to be respectful of that. It’s just not the year when you in bring in 12 players — not that we need it.”

Klopp said he believes Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United will all be stronger next season, whenever that starts.

Another season of total dominance by Liverpool is unlikely, but Klopp added: “We will make some good decisions and we will see where it leads to.”
