National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) Celebrates World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Attorneys Serving Older Adults and People With Disabilities Join Efforts to Prevent Elder Abuse.

WASHINGTON, June 12, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — According to the United Nations, “virtually all countries are expected to see substantial growth in the number of older persons between 2015 and 2030, and that growth will be faster in developing regions. Because the numbers of older persons are growing, the amount of elder abuse can be expected to grow with it.”

The National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) acknowledges the growing population of older adults by celebrating World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15th. The United Nations General Assembly officially recognized this annual event “in its resolution 66/127, December 2011, following a request by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA), who first established the commemoration in June 2006. It represents the one day in the year when the whole world voices its opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted to some of our older generations.”

As an accredited nongovernmental organization to the United Nations’ Open-Ended Working Group on Aging, NAELA has participated in international discussions on the need to protect the rights of older adults.

“NAELA member attorneys serve older adults and support legislation that aims to protect this population, such as nursing home rights and nursing home quality issues,” said NAELA President Wendy Cappelletto, Esq., CAP.
