Martin Lewis Money Saving Expert's urgent advice to smart meter users

Martin Lewis appeared on ITV’s This Morning today to ask about her energy bills. The woman was on a prepayment meter and was in debt to her energy supplier to the tune of £200.

“You need to talk to them and get them to see if everything is working correctly or if there was a problem before to try and understand the issue.

“You can switch provider on prepaying, you are in debt so that will be a problem, and there are savings maybe five to 10 percent, not like the 30 to 40 percent most people could save who are on a normal billed meter.”

“Double or quadrupling your bill like you just said to me, that just shouldn’t be happening. You need to get on to the provider and say to them why is this happening? Can you detail to me what’s going on? Because this can’t be right.

If that doesn’t work if you think there is problem then you need to complain to the ombudsman.”

For many energy bills are an expensive pain. However, Martin has claimed energy bills are “super cheap” at the moment thanks to coronavirus.

Martin explained: “There’s lack of demand. With people staying at home and travelling less there’s been a global sump slump for oil. In fact, for a day last week, staggeringly the US oil price was negative – they couldn’t sell it, so instead they were having to pay to have barrels stored.

“And this low oil price feeds into switchers’ prices for gas and electricity too. They’re at their cheapest for about three years and not just small firms, but large big six companies also have the cheapest tariffs we’ve seen in years.

“But it’s only switchers prices that are cheap, the price cap hasn’t moved and all the big six standard tariffs that most people are on are still costly.”

Council tax bills can also be testing. Martin Lewis has advice for those looking to reduce their council tax bill. /life-style/property/1282048/martin-lewis-council-tax-band-bills-discount-money-savings

Not everyone has to pay their council tax in full.

These range for 25 percent discounts to offers that could save thousands of pounds.

Some properties are in the wrong council tax band which means those living there could be paying more than they need to.
