In an Instagram post this Monday, The Weeknd, the R&B singer, announced he was donating a sum of $500,000 across three different organizations to help out the black community during this difficult time. The performing artist posted three of his donation receipts, People Magazine reported today.
According to the aforementioned outlet, The Weeknd donated $200,000 to the Black Lives Matter Global Network, another $200,000 to Colin Kaepernick’s organization, as well as another $100,000 to National Bail Out.
In the caption of his post, The Weeknd stated that it was important to continue supporting our “brothers and sisters” out in the streets “risking everything” to make great change for black people. The Weeknd also urged people of tremendous wealth to do the same.
As it was previously reported, George Floyd died this past Monday, and a plethora of celebrities announced donations to several pro-African American movements and groups. For instance, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds revealed they were donating $200,000 to the NAACP.
Niecy Nash, as well, announced on Good Morning America on Friday that she and the rest of the cast and crew from Reno 911! would be donating $10,000 personally to the family of the fallen man.
Furthermore, other stars revealed donations to groups such as the Minnesota Freedom Fund, a non-profit that helps pay bail for those arrested during the protests. Thus far, other stars including Don Cheadle, Janelle Monae, Seth Rogen, and Steve Carell have donated to the organization as well.
Kehlani and Jameela Jamil revealed their donations of $1,000 as well. A GoFundMe page was also created by Floyd’s brother to help pay for the funeral costs as well as counseling and traveling and lodging. Since the page was revealed, it accrued over $9 million.

The event kicked off right as the United States was first starting to reopen following approximately three months of quarantine and self-isolation. The world just got finished taking on the COVID-19 pandemic, and it’s currently unclear how the international protests will affect the numbers.
