Earthquakes today mapped: Madeira islands struck by 5.2 magnitude quake

The Madeiran archipelago often feels earthquakes, due to its location in the junction zone of the North American, Eurasian and Nubian lithospheric plates.

According to a report from Acoriano Oriental, between November 5, 2019, and January 13, 2020 more than 4,000 earthquakes were recorded west of the island of Faial.

A statement from the report read: “The seismicity of the archipelago is generally organised into seismic sequences, either as replicas of a major event or as swarms or seizures of small to moderate magnitude, the strongest being felt by the population.

“The region west of the island of Faial is one of the seismic zones where periods of intense seismic activity recur”.
