The Handmaid’s Tale theories: Serena Joy to end up as a handmaid in harrowing twist

Gilead is currently on a precarious precipice in the Hulu series, with rebellious handmaids beginning to take back control of their previously restricted lives. Fans of The Handmaid’s Tale are speculating Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) could be severely punished for abandoning the cause.

The speculative series opens with June (Elisabeth Moss) having been stripped of her name and freedom.

She is forced into an intimate relationship with Commander Waterford (Joseph Fiennes), who attempts to make her pregnant in a gruesome ceremony with his wife, Serena, also present.

Alongside her duties as a wife of Gilead, Serena is also cruel and sadistic to the resident handmaids.

When fans last left the series, June had successfully liberated over 100 children to Canada, including her own.

Unfortunately she had also suffered from a potentially fatal gunshot, so fans are eagerly awaiting the next chapter in the thrilling series.

Meanwhile, Serena has abandoned the cause and fled to Canada, but her safety won’t be assured for long.

She is now facing prosecution for the horrendous crimes she subjected June to.

With Yvonne Strahovski remaining a key part of the main cast list for season four, most fans are expecting Serena to be dealt a major blow as Gilead will want to make an example out of her.

Other fans have questioned the logic of this theory, reminding the original poster that handmaids are required to be fertile.

One commented: “This is a pretty popular theory, but I don’t see it happening, because according to Gilead Serena is infertile. She was deemed infertile due to not being able to conceive with Fred, not because she was shot.”

Even if a test later proves Serena as able to conceive a child, she is marked down by the state of Gilead as infertile so it would be unlikely she would be made a handmaid.

Yet another fan has an even more grim prediction, though if anyone in the series deserves this fate it would be Serena.

“If Gilead didn’t hang her on the wall as a traitor, I think she would likely be sent to the colonies.”

The colonies are a wasteland of poverty and disease, and traitors of Gilead who aren’t killed outright are often abandoned there to fend for themselves.

No release date has yet been set for the upcoming fourth season, but it’s expected the rough yet incredibly worthwhile series will return later this year.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 will be released on Hulu later in 2020.
