Carabao Cup final prize money: How much have Man City won by beating Aston Villa?

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said his players were “starving and hungry” for silverware and they delivered when it mattered most. City secured a hard-fought 2-1 Carabao Cup final victory over Aston Villa as they won the trophy for the third year running.

Sergio Aguero got the ball rolling for City in the first half, before Rodri doubled their lead a matter of minutes later.

Ally Samatta capitalised on John Stones’ slip up, though, as he headed the ball past City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.

City held on for the win in the second half as Villa pushed to take the match to extra time.

But just how much prize money was on offer in this year’s Carabao Cup final?

How much can teams earn in the Carabao Cup final?

Amazingly, prize money in the Carabao Cup is only awarded from the semi-finals onwards.

This means that clubs who went out at the quarter-final stage did not receive any cash for their efforts.

The Carabao Cup’s prize fund stands at just £200,000, with the losing semi-finalists each receiving £25,000.

The winners of this year’s final, City, will take home £100,000.

The losing finalists will walk away with £50,000.

The prize money pales in comparison to the FA Cup, where the champions earn an impressive £3.6million.

In fact, the FA Cup third round alone is more valuable than winning the Carabao Cup with a prize of £135,000 up for grabs.

However, while the Carabao Cup’s purse may not seem like a huge amount, this does not include money generated through gate receipts and television deals.

Unlike league games, the total sum collected from a Carabao Cup tie is split 45 per cent each way, regardless of where the fixture is played.

The final at Wembley last season saw £2m collected at the gates, meaning each club took home £1m.
