Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp issues challenge to Reds squad after shock Watford defeat

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has urged his players to “go again” after they succumbed to their first league defeat of the season. The Reds boss is keen to avoid a slump ahead of their Champions League last 16-second leg against Atletico Madrid.

Two goals from Ismaila Sarr and one from Troy Deeney saw Liverpool’s Invincibles hopes crushed but the silver lining remains that they’re still set to win the Premier League title unchallenged.

Speaking after the game, Klopp said: “I don’t think you break records because you want to.

“We would lose a game at some time, it was clear it would happen. We didn’t think about it. Tonight it has happened.

“Now we don’t have to think about the records, we can think about winning games.

That’s because there have been so many times this season in which the Reds have pulled themselves from the dirt to win.

Klopp still didn’t believe his side deserved to lose so emphatically though, but he did pay tribute to Watford for their performance.

“I think 3-0 was a little bit harsh but we had a big hand in that and we didn’t perform like we should have. But congratulations to Watford,” he added.

“We don’t think it’s the biggest catastrophe in the world of football.

“Yes, it’s the opposite of what we wanted and some people might say they saw it coming, but I didn’t see it coming.

“Just because you’re not convincing in the last game doesn’t mean the next one is the same.”

Watford have moved out of the relegation zone with the win, with Bournemouth and Aston Villa dropping in following West Ham’s win over Southampton earlier in the day.

Liverpool now go to Chelsea in the FA Cup on Tuesday, looking to put things right.

It’s just over ten days until they take on Atletico at Anfield, with their Champions League qualifications hanging in the balance following a 1-0 first leg defeat.
