Donald Trump disaster: How President warned Afghanistan withdrawal would ‘boost ISIS'

Following a week long truce plan between the fundamentalist military group and Washington, Donald Trump along with NATO allies will withdraw troops from the region. The move aims to bring about peace in a country that has been ravaged by 18 years of conflict. Later today, the agreement will be signed in Qatar after the US-Afghan statement made in Kabul.

It reads: “The coalition will complete the withdrawal of their remaining forces from Afghanistan within 14 months following the announcement of this joint declaration and the US-Taliban agreement subject to the Taliban’s fulfilment of its commitments.”

However, the move contradicts a previous warning issued by Trump in 2017, when he said that withdrawing from the country would boost terror organisations like ISIS and al Qaeda.

He said in a speech that his instincts were initially in favour of withdrawal but abandoned that position over the concerns.

He said: “A hasty withdrawal would create a vacuum that terrorists — including ISIS and al Qaeda — would instantly fill, just as happened before September 11.”

Mr Trump added that ISIS had emerged because the US withdrew from Iraq in 2011 and that America “cannot repeat in Afghanistan the mistakes our leaders made in Iraq”.

He also said that “America’s enemies must never know our plans or believe they can wait us out. I will not say when we are going to attack, but attack we will”.

While he warned against withdrawal at the time, prior to the war in Afghanistan Mr Trump was critical of US entry.

He wasn’t, and Western forces entered the country to remove the Taliban from their authoritative position.

The group, however, continued to destabilise the country with attacks.

More than 2,400 US troops have been killed during the conflict. About 12,000 are still stationed in the country. President Trump has promised to put an end to the war.
