Normani Not Pleased With How Camila Cabello Handled Old ‘Racist’ Comments

Normani recently dropped a statement in which she revealed she wasn’t happy with the way her former bandmate, Camila Cabello, handled re-surfaced racist jokes and comments.

Page Six claims that back in December 2019, old Tumblr posts from the 22-year-old songstress featured her using Asian racial slurs and the n-word, for which the singer subsequently apologized.

Normani, her former Fifth Harmony bandmate, wasn’t satisfied with Camila’s apology. During an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, Normani stated that the entire ordeal was very “devastating” for her because her relationship with the band was supposed to be a “save haven” and a “sisterhood.”

She added that had the tables been turned, she would’ve gone to bat for any member of the group, however, she felt that Cabello didn’t do the same thing for her.

The 23-year-old “Motivation” singer claimed she was dealing with racist comments on social media for years, and when Cabello didn’t address the Tumblr posts right away, especially Normani’s reaction to it, she felt as though her relationship was second in line, next to Camila’s fans.

On her Twitter account, Cabello, who was 15-years-old at the time of her posts, apologized for the tweets, stating that she used “language” that she was very ashamed of and would continue to regret.

Over the years, Camila explained, she learned the history of the words and now regrets ever having used them, due to the hurtful legacy and connotations.

Last year, Ashley Mitchell reported that Normani actually struggled immensely with being a member of Fifth Harmony. The singer, who spoke with Billboard initially, claimed much of the online abuse stemmed from her status as a black woman, and her bandmates weren’t able to understand her issues, even though they tried their best.

Normani gave them credit for at least trying, but ultimately believes they didn’t have the tools to really help her because they couldn’t understand her experience. Four years ago, in 2016, her relationship with Cabello took a turn when fans thought she had insulted her during a Facebook Live Preview.
