Debbie McGee: Strictly star left stunned after EastEnders villain asks her out live on-air

Strictly Come Dancing star Debbie McGee, 61, was joined by John Altman, 67, who played Nick Cotton in EastEnders. The BBC Radio Berkshire host was left slightly taken aback after the singer and actor asked if the presenter was “free next week”.

The Nick Cotton actor was among the show’s original cast members before his character was killed off in the 30th anniversary episode of the soap.

He joined Debbie to chat about his latest projects, when the conversation quickly turned to his relationship status.

“Now John, this year you’ve got your audiobook being updated. You’re coming in to do the talk on March 19 at the Bel & The Dragon, was it?” Debbie queried.

John replied: “I’ll have to check on that. But yes [the show] is in Cookham and there still are some tickets for that. I might be singing my new single.”

Debbie commented: “Your single, your album. Life doesn’t stop.”

He interjected: “I’m single as well. Talking of singles.”

A stunned Debbie replied: “Oh. Well, there we go everybody,” as John asked her: “What are you doing next week?”

A seemingly flustered Debbie laughed off the comment, as the former EastEnders actor chuckled at his bold admission.

John, who played Nick Cotton in BBC soap EastEnders, was poignantly dubbed “Nasty Nick” and was the son of Dot Cotton (June Brown).

Nick was eventually killed off the show five years ago, after he bullied his way through Albert Square, from carrying out murder to dealing drugs.

The soapstar was previously married to Bridget Pouhan, but the couple divorced in 1997 after 11 years of marriage.

Meanwhile, Debbie, who was married to the late Paul Daniels for nearly 30 years up until his death in 2016, has opened up about finding love after loss.
