Coronavirus crisis: Tenerife hotel on lockdown as outbreak hits holiday hotspot

The man, understood to be a doctor, had travelled to the Spanish holiday island from the Lombardy region – the centre of the outbreak in Italy. He was tested for coronavirus, formally named COVID-19, after falling ill. The entire hotel, which is currently hosting approximately 1,000 guests, has been quarantined as a precautionary measure.

Local reports have named the hotel as the H10 Costa Adeje Palace in the south of the island.

The Italian went to a private clinic in Adeje after feeling unwell for several days.

He was then tested for coronavirus and kept in isolation while authorities tested him for a second time, as per Spain’s protocol for suspected coronavirus cases.

The man is the third person to test positive for the virus in Spain.

Canary Islands president Angel Victor Torres confirmed on Monday night: “This afternoon the coronavirus protocol has been activated for an Italian tourist in the south of Tenerife.

“The result from the first test carried out in the Canaries is positive.

“Tomorrow new tests will take place in Madrid. The patient has been quarantined.”
