He will visit the Taj Mahal as well as make stop overs in in Gujarat state, Agra and Delhi. The US President is expected to try and thrash out a trade agreement with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi. Relations have deteriorated in recent times over US demands for greater access to Indian poultry and dairy markets.
In addition, the White House has complained about Indian price controls on medical devices such as stents and stringent local data storage rules that U.S. technology firms say will raise the costs of doing business.
For his part, the Indian Prime Minister has demanded the restoration of trade concessions that Trump withdrew in 2019, as well as greater access to U.S. markets for its pharmaceutical and farm products.
Trump administration officials have however dampened down hopes of any major breakthroughs occurring during the visit.
“We want to address a lot of concerns and we’re not quite there yet,” a senior Trump administration official told reporters.
