A source with knowledge of Sky’s roadmap has informed Express.co.uk that an update with the Disney+ app will land on the box next month to coincide with the UK release date for the service, currently scheduled for March 24. Sky already enjoys a very close relationship with Disney — with a huge range of on-demand Disney movies and series, as well as a dedicated Sky Cinema Disney channel with a rotating selection of the latest releases from the House Of Mouse — so it would make sense that Disney+ would be supported.
According to our source, Sky has already started to brief some of its employees about the new Sky Q app. The set-top box already includes a Spotify, BBC iPlayer and Netflix app, among others. These apps allow the same level of functionality you’d expect to see on an equivalent Smart TV app, or console app for the same service.
Disney is clearly looking to make a splash when it launches in the UK next month. Disney+ is already confirmed to be coming to Samsung TVs, as well as iOS, iPadOS, Apple TV, Roku and Android, to name a few.
If you’ve been living under a rock and don’t know about Disney+, the all-new streaming service is a colossal push from the Hollywood colossus to oust the likes of Amazon Prime, Apple TV+, and Netflix. The new subscription service leverages the sheer heft of Disney’s media empire to bring new original shows and blockbuster movies centred on its existing portfolio of properties, including the likes of Star Wars, Pixar, Marvel, and National Geographic.

As well as exclusive new series and direct-to-Disney+ movies, the £5.99 a month subscription service will be home to a number of key properties from the back catalogue, including every entry in the record-breaking Marvel Cinematic Universe, every episode of The Simpsons, as well as classic animated films and their live-action remakes, like The Lion King.
Bringing Disney+ to Sky Q would be a remarkably fast turnaround. After all, Sky took two years to bring Netflix to its flagship set-top box and there is still no sign of support for Amazon’s Prime Video service, which is already available on rival Virgin Media’s TV V6 system. Neither of these sets currently support the Apple TV+ app.
