Ant and Dec left red-faced as audience laugh during harrowing story 'This is important'

Ant and Dec were welcomed back onto screens this evening as they made their grand return with their seminal show. However during their first unexpected surprise the hosts revealed they had built a house alongside a collection of builders. They didn’t just build it for any reason, however, as they went on to explain they had built it for a specific couple, Petra and Simon.

Petra and Simon were pictured just outside the studio, as they had been told they were next in line to arrive on the show during an advert break.

But, as the camera focused on them, Ant told the audience about their sad journey.

They revealed Petra and Simon headed up Darcey’s Dream – a charity for bereaved parents.

This came into action after their daughter, Darcey, tragically died at just nine weeks old.

Eventually Ant gained control of the audience once again, and brought them back into listening to the story of Petra and Simon.

Speaking out on Twitter, viewers felt a little awkward about the badly-timed laughter.

One viewer wrote: “And the award for poorly timed audience laughter goes to…#Saturdaynighttakeaway.”

Another said: “Oh my god actually thought the audience were laughing at their upsetting story then! #AntandDec #SaturdayNightTakeaway #SNT.”

With a third chiming in to add: “Well that just proves the audience weren’t listening!! #antanddec #saturdaynighttakeaway.”

Earlier this week the pair spoke to Chris Moyles about their Get Out of Me Ear segment, saying there is “definitely” some cut out footage of the show.

Dec went on: “There’s a lot of tape on the cutting room floor, let’s just say.”

Ant jumped in to say: “We never want to make people look bad.

“We want to make them look uncomfortable and we want to make them squirm a little bit but what you don’t want is to just humiliate someone.”

Concluding the discussion with a joke, Ant added: “The only person we like to humiliate is Stephen Mulhern,” with Dec concurring: “But he’s asking for it!”

Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway continues Saturday at 7pm on ITV.
