Storm Dennis UK: Flights cancelled for second day – can easyJet passengers get refund?

Storm Dennis has brought heavy rain and strong winds to the UK this weekend, causing disruption for many. The Met Office forecast said today: “Storm Dennis still bringing heavy rain and gales in the south for a time, further disruption possible.

“However this gradually clearing southeastwards, most areas turning brighter and showery. Showers, heavy, frequent and blustery with hill snow in the north. Colder.”

Amid the stormy weather, some flights have been cancelled, including a number at Heathrow Airport and Gatwick Airport in London.

This morning, Gatwick Airport released a short statement on its website, which read: “Due to Storm Dennis we are experiencing very high winds today and this is causing some delays and cancellations to flights.

“We advise passengers to allow plenty of time to get to the airport and to check the status of their flight with their airline.”

This weekend, easyJet announced 234 flights would not take off yesterday, and a further 60 cancellations on Sunday, according to reports.

It’s estimated 10,000 people will be affected by today’s cancellations, on top of around 40,000 whose flights did not depart yesterday.

Amid the cancellations, easyJet explained what affected passengers could do.

Their options include getting a refund, transferring their flight free of charge, or re-routing.

DON’T MISS

An easyJet spokesperson said yesterday: “Due to the extreme weather conditions caused by Storm Dennis, it has been necessary for easyJet to cancel some flights over the weekend.

“We are doing everything possible to minimise the impact of the disruption for our customers. Affected passengers are being given the option of receiving a refund, transferring their flight free of charge, or re-routing.

“We will do all we can to get our passengers to their final destination as soon as we can. We are also providing hotel rooms and meals for customers who require them.

“We recommend customers travelling to and from UK this weekend to check the status of their flight and gate information on easyJet’s Flight Tracker at www.easyjet.com/en/flight-tracker or on the app for latest travel updates.

A British Airways spokesperson said: “The majority of our flights are planned to operate as scheduled, but like all airlines flying to and from the UK today we are experiencing some disruption due to the stormy weather conditions.

“We are merging a small number of Heathrow short-haul flights to the same destination and using larger aircraft where possible to minimise disruption.

“Customers can check ba.com for the latest flight information.”
