Coronavirus tourist panic: Holiday hotspot on alert after Bali visitor diagnosed

The South East Asia holiday hotspot’s government is retracing the movements of a tourist from China who was diagnosed with coronavirus upon return from the resort island of Bali, health officials said. The world’s fourth most populous country, with more than 260 million people, is a popular destination for Chinese visitors but has so far not recorded any cases.

Anung Sugihantono, from Indonesia’s health ministry, confirmed authorities were checking hotels and other destinations where the tourist might have gone.

But nobody in Bali has yet been found with symptoms of the fatal disease.

Another ministry official, Achmad Yurianto, said the tourist was probably infected on public transport in China upon return.

In a statement on microblogging site Weibo, media reports in China’s Anhui province said the tourist had been identified only as Jin.

The tourist travelled from Wuhan city – where the epidemic originated – to Bali on January 22 and returned to China on January 28.

The tourist reportedly flew on a plane operated by Indonesia’s Lion Air from Wuhan and returned via a Garuda Indonesia flight to Shanghai.

Coronavirus infections have surpassed the deadly 2003 outbreak of SARS and killed nearly 1,400 people

On Thursday, February 13, at least 60,335 people were infected, the majority of whom were in China.

Singapore, Hong Kong and Thailand are chasing China with 50, 4750 and 35 infections respectively.

The UK is far behind with nine confirmed infections and an additional two people tested positive for coronavirus on a Japanese cruise ship.

A woman travelling to London from China was being treated for coronavirus at London’s St Thomas’ Hospital, according to Chris Witty, Chief Medical Officer for England.
