Japan earthquake: Strong quake strikes near Fukushima – Ring of Fire on alert

The 5.2 earthquake struck today just over 50 miles from Fukushima, which is home to 300,000 people. A tsunami warning has not been issued for the earthquake, which was felt by witnesses on the mainland. One told earthquake-tracking website EMSC-CSEM: “It was a weak shake but long, about 10 seconds.”

Another person noticed their oil heater moving.

They said: “My oil heater with four wheels made a small sound and moved a little.”

Japan is located along the Ring of Fire, which means earthquakes occur often.

The horseshoe-shaped Ring of Fire, which is 25,000 miles-long, is known for its chain of volcanoes.

The Ring is a huge are in the basin of the Pacific Ocean and is said to be the location for 90 per cent of the world’s earthquakes.

This is a developing story, more to follow…
