Chris Evans: Virgin Radio star speaks out after co-host sparks concern with tearful moment

Chris Evans, 53, found himself comforting his Virgin Radio co-star Rachel Horne on Friday morning, after a listener’s sweet message caused her to break down in tears. Rachel had to take a short break from reading the bulletin in order to compose herself before she returned to finish the segment.

The co-stars were discussing listener’s favourite songs, but while Rachel was reading out one message, she was overcome with emotion.

“Todays absolute classic is chosen by Theresa Williams from Luton in Bedfordshire,” she read.

“She says I am a palliative care assistant for Hospice At Home.

“I love my job and I’m always meeting the most amazing people, but it can be tough.”

Suddenly there was complete silence, as Rachel’s voice trailed off her last words.

This moment was followed by a pause, where it seemed she had moved away from the microphone.

Listeners heard a few sniffs, before she came back and continued to read: “Every morning you lot recharge me with joy and happiness and actually this song is your show in a nutshell,” she struggled, with a frog in her throat and eyes full of tears.

Trying to get her words out, she introduced Theresa’s chosen song, Walking on sunshine by Katrina and the Waves before having to take another moment away from the mic.

Chris rushed to comfort his co-host after she had finished speaking: “Well done Rachel,” he soothed.

“Loads of love coming in for Rachel for obvious reasons.”

The video, which many fans are calling a “masterpiece,” has brought feelings of grief and nostalgia to viewers, as the artist and his dad sit together, looking directly at the camera as he sings the meaningful lyrics.

While reading out messages on the early segment of his morning show, Chris came across one that detailed how sad the music video was.

“Oh my god, just watched the James Blunt interview,” the former BBC host read aloud a listener’s text.

“Just when you think it can’t get any more tearful it does, says Adam.”

James released the video last week and it already has over five million views on YouTube.

“Now, I haven’t seen this yet,” the host admitted.

“Ozzy Nick watched the video during the news and he described to me what happened and I nearly burst into tears.

“I haven’t seen it though, I’ll watch it after the show, I’m not going to watch it during the show!”

Worried after hearing the upsetting reviews about the video that he would be at risk of tearing up live on-air, Chris decided to reduce that risk and leave it until after the show and finished.

“It’s not a good idea for the rest of the show,” he chuckled.

“We’ve still got half a box of tissues left because… well it doesn’t matter why!”
