Samsung Galaxy Watch update: Why fans could soon see a huge performance boost

Samsung is believed to be hard at work on a new smartwatch. The new model, which will supersede the Galaxy Watch, is rumoured to include a substantial increase in built-in storage and battery life. The existing Galaxy Watch includes 4GB of built-in storage. According to Samsung-centric blog SamMobile, this will be doubled to 8GB in the new watch.

That storage boost could be hugely helpful if you’re planning to use the wearable for long-distance runs. The extra memory will allow owners to store music for offline playback, so you can leave the smartphone paired with your Galaxy Watch at home and still be able to pound the pavement listening to your favourite tracks. Provided that Samsung doesn’t plan on massively increasing the amount of storage required for the Tizen operating system that powers the wearable, you should be able to fit twice as many tracks on the device.

Interestingly, arch-rival Apple also doubled the amount of available storage was found within its smartwatch with its latest generation Apple Watch. However, this rival wearable went from 16GB on the Series 4, to a whopping 32GB on the Series 5. That’s four times what you’ll get on Samsung’s current flagship smartwatch – and still double the rumoured specs for the next-generation.

Of course, given that you need an iOS device to pair with an Apple Watch, this still doesn’t help Android smartphone owners looking for the biggest possible offline library of music on their wrist.

However, Samsung could snatch the crown from the Apple Watch in one category – the battery life.

According to whispers heard by SamMobile, the next Samsung smartwatch will include a 330mAh battery. That’s a pretty sizeable increase on the 247mAh cell in the current model – a 33 percent boost, to be precise. Given that the Galaxy Watch already lasts all-day, there should be some serious longevity to the new model.

Either that, or Samsung has a number of new features planned that require extra power inside the wrist-worn gadget, like increase health tracking features or more.

Excitingly, not that many details have leaked around the so-called Galaxy Watch 2 ahead of the Galaxy Unpacked hardware showcase planned for February 11, 2020. As well as a new smartwatch, there are rumours of a new pair of Galaxy Buds with dramatically boosted battery life but no cancellation. A new entry into the Galaxy Fold range of flexible phones is also tipped to be coming.

And of course, we’ll see the Galaxy S20 – the bafflingly-named follow-up to the Galaxy S10. The new smartphone series will purportedly ship in three flavours. All of these will boast 5G support.
