Call of Duty Black Ops 5 release update as Modern Warfare steals 2020 limelight

Call of Duty 2020 has been announced but Activision has yet to confirm that it will be Black Ops 5 releasing this year. As COD fans will know, Activision follows a three-year development cycle that includes its three studios, Treyarch, Sledgehammer Games and Infinity Ward. Raven Software also plays a support role in most of these projects but doesn’t handle mainline solo games by itself.

And this week saw Activision provide the first information regarding plans for Call of Duty 2020.

This came during a company earnings event, in which it was revealed that the next COD project would be arriving in 2020.

That won’t come as much of a surprise, considering that a new Call of Duty game is released every year.

The big difference here is that we didn’t learn which studio was heading the project, or what consoles it’s being planned for.

We can expect the next Call of Duty game to be on PS4 and Xbox One but the PS5 and Xbox Series X should also be possibilities too.

As expected, we didn’t learn what the new Call of Duty game will be called but surprisingly, we also didn’t learn who is making it.

This lack of information certainly points to an early report from Kotaku, which states that Treyarch is now in charge of COD 2020 and that it will be Black Ops 5.

So even if Activision hasn’t confirmed its plans yet, it looks like a Call of Duty Black Ops 5 release date is on the cards for this year.

As quoted by Motley Fool. Activision’s President and Chief Operating Officer Coddy Johnson had this to say about Call of Duty in 2020:

“So across console, PC, mobile and e-sports, the Call of Duty franchise has never been better positioned for growth and there is more to come, including entirely new experiences within the Modern Warfare universe.

“And then, of course, in Q4 of this year, a new premium Call of Duty release, which is already generating excitement in our play tests.”

Activision’s Dennis Durkin also shared news on the upcoming release, revealing that Modern Warfare is expected to remain the top-selling COD game this generation.

“In Q4, we plan to launch the next premium release of Call of Duty,” Durkin explained.

“We can’t wait to unveil what our teams have been working on, and we feel great about the content. Although, as is customary, we are prudently assuming lower sell-in for Q4 versus Modern Warfare this past year.”

Call of Duty Modern Warfare has proven popular with fans and the launch of Season 2 is expected to generate a lot of interest and revenue for Activision.

COD fans will have to wait a few more months to find out what the setting and gameplay will be like for Black Ops 5.

The first reveal trailer for Modern Warfare was released during May 2019, but there’s a good chance we will learn more about the project before then.

Treyarch Studios have been sharing news about Call of Duty but this has all been focused around Black Ops 4, with no mention made yet of its future plans.

Black Ops 4 continues to receive updates and Double XP events in 2020, and it should be long before we seeing a few hints, if Treyarch is leading the next COD project.

There has also been some speculation that Activision could release some kind of COD remaster in 2020, with Durkin adding: “In addition, our business units will continue to tap into our portfolio of beloved IP to bring several remastered and reimagined experiences to our players in 2020, which we will announce closer to launch.

“Bringing all this together, our outlook reflects 5% year-over-year growth in net bookings. We expect Activision to experience the strongest net bookings growth among our segments both in dollar terms and on a percentage basis.”
