Bermuda Triangle mystery solved? Underwater footage answers century-old question

The mystery surrounding an infamous ship that vanished in the Bermuda Triangle nearly 100 years ago appears to have been resolved. The fate of the SS Cotopaxi has long been shrouded in mystery and has sparked claims of “otherworldly” and paranormal involvement. The steam-powered vessel left Charleston in South Carolina for Havana, Cuba in 1925, but the Cotopaxi never reached her destination and the bodies of the 32 passengers were never recovered.

However, in a groundbreaking documentary it has now been revealed that the wreck of the merchant ship has at long last been discovered.

According to the experts, the Cotopaxi actually sank during a storm just days after it sent sail.

It appears that the wreck has been known locally for decades as the Bear Wreck.

Last year, a group of underwater explorers and maritime archaeologists surveyed the shipwreck about 35 nautical miles off the coast of St. Augustine, Florida, and confirmed its true identity.

The underwater mission to find the shipwreck was captured by the Science Channel documentary series Shipwreck Secrets.

It came about when marine biologist and underwater explorer Michael Barnette contacted British historian Guy Walters to help find the mysterious ship.

He said: “Walters discovered something previously unknown about the SS Cotopaxi’s voyage.

“The ship had sent out wireless distress signals with a position on December 1st, 1925, two days after it left Charleston.”

This discovery helped the crew locate the ship’s final resting place.

The Bermuda Triangle has become known as a region where many vessels have suddenly and inexplicably vanished.

The stretch of water, which is also known as the Devil’s Triangle, is located between Florida, Puerto Rico and Bermuda.

More than 1,000 lives are believed to be have been lost within the triangle over the past century.

The mystery of the Cotopaxi disappearance itself was enshrined in Hollywood lore, after it was featured in Steven Spielberg’s film Close Encounters of the Third Kind, where the Cotopaxi is discovered in the Gobi Desert.
