USA v Iran: Donald Trump’s military threat ‘galvanised’ Iranians and risked major conflict

Tensions between Iran and US have appeared to subside however fears of a violent conflict still remain a topic of discussion. Iran international editor and presenter Sadeq Saba explained to Express.co.uk that after US President Donald Trump’s tweet to destroy cultural sites in Iran, people of all opinions “galvanised” towards the President. During the height of the tensions between Iran and the US, President Trump took to Twitter to voice his opinions and defend the United States’ killing of Iraq General Qassem Soleimani.

He tweeted: “The US has targeted 52 Iranian sites… some at a very high level and important to Iran and Iranian culture.

“Those targets and Iran itself, will be hit very fast and very hard.”

According to Mr Saba, these comments would likely have the opposite desire to what Mr Trump wants.

The Iran expert insisted this would please some within the Iranian regime while at the same time unify the Iranian people against the United States.

This unification could result in a major conflict between the two nations.

Mr Saba said: “I think when President Donald Trump announced he would attack Iranian cultural sites it was the most insensitive statement from a US President.

“Cultural sites do not belong to the Islamic rulers of Iran.

“They belong to the Iranian people and the people are very proud of their cultural heritage especially pre-Islamic heritage.

The Iranian expert continued: “Now if the United States did bomb cultural sites there are parts of the Iranian regime that would be happy.

“This is because the US would be doing a job for them they wanted to do for many years but was unable to do.

“Iranian Islamic rulers do not respect pre-Islamic culture or heritage.”
