Selena Gomez Believes Instagram Is Destroying Her Generation – ‘There’s So Much Pressure To Look The Same As Everyone Else’

Despite having more than 167 million Instagram followers – which makes her the fourth most-followed celebrity in the world – Selena Gomez says that she wishes the photo-sharing app wasn’t a thing.

In a new interview with Dazed magazine for their spring 2020 issue, the 27-year-old singer says that Instagram has put a lot of “pressure” on her generation, making them think they have to be like everyone else instead of being a unique individual.

When the interviewer asked Gomez if she could push a button to make Instagram disappear, would she do it, Gomez was very honest with her answer.

“Oh gosh! I think I’d have a lot of people not liking me for saying yes,” Gomez said with a laugh. “If I could find a balanced, happy medium that would be great, but I would be lying if I said that it isn’t destroying some of my generation, their identity. It’s a huge part of why I named my album Rare – because there’s so much pressure to look the same as everyone else.”

After taking a two-year break from social media in 2018, Gomez said it was “scary” to start posting again. During the first four days, Gomez admits she thought there was no way she could do it. So, she made some adjustments to her social media activity, and now Gomez only posts when she feels like she needs to. Then, she will log off instead of taking time to explore or look at other things.

Gomez has said in the past that she was much happier with herself and how she looked when she was out of social media, and that helped her a lot. The singer explained that she needed to let her old self go and purge multiple different things, but it was specifically who she was then.

During the interview, Gomez also opened up about releasing new music after taking a break to take care of her health issues, including undergoing a kidney transplant in 2017 due to her lupus. Gomez said the “scariest” part for her was thinking that no one would like her new music after such a long break, and that her singing career would be over.

“I genuinely thought that,” said Gomez.

The singer says she worked hard on her new album, but if it came out and completely flopped, she wondered where she would go from there. Of course, fans are thrilled with her new music, and she had nothing to worry about.
