Donald Trump acquitted: US President attacks ‘evil, corrupt, dirty cops’

The President, cleared of impeachment charges that accused him of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, furiously hit out as he revelled in his acquittal.

He said: “We’ve all been through a lot together. And it never really stopped. We’ve been going through this now for over three years.

“It was evil, it was corrupt, it was dirty cops, it was leakers and liars, and this should never ever happen to another president. We went through hell, unfairly.”

Mr Trump, talking about the “witch-hunt” that started early in his presidency, said: “We went through Russia, Russia, Russia. It was all b******t.

“As everybody knows, my family, our great country and your President have been put through a terrible ordeal by some very dishonest and corrupt people.”

Though he did not mention them by name, the US leader singled out House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who launched the impeachment inquiry, and his fellow Republican Mitt Romney for citing their religion as justification for their actions.

Mr Trump told the annual National Prayer Breakfast in Washington: “I don’t like people who use their faith as justification for doing what they know is wrong. Nor do I like people who say I pray for you when they know that’s not so. So many people have been hurt, and we can’t let that go on.

“I will be discussing that a little bit later at the White House.”

Mr Romney was the only Republican to find the President guilty on one article of impeachment, the abuse of power.

The devout Mormon said in his remarks in the Senate on Wednesday that it was his faith that led him to make that decision. Mr Trump claimed he was struggling to forgive those who tried to cost him his presidency.

He added: “We are grateful to the people of this room for the lovely show to religion, not one religion but many religions.

“They are brave, they are brilliant, they are fighters, they like people and sometimes they hate people. I’m sorry. I apologise. I am trying to learn. Not easy. It’s not easy.

“When they impeach you for nothing, and you’re supposed to like them, it’s not easy, folks. I do my best.”

The Senate decision brings to a close the four-month process that led to a new level of toxicity between the White House and Democrats.

Earlier, he had taken a lap of honour as he walked into the breakfast reception holding up the front pages of USA Today and The Washington Post with their oversized headlines proclaiming his acquittal.

He said he might frame it after saying it was “the only good headline I’ve ever had in The Washington Post”.
