Game of Thrones Prequel Series 'House of the Dragon' Coming to HBO

The same day we learned HBO opted to not to pick up The Longest Night pilot to series, the network announced at WarnerMedia’s HBO Max presentation that a new Game of Thrones spinoff series, a prequel called House of the Dragon, has been ordered straight to series. This is the Fire and Blood-inspired Game of Thrones prequel we heard about first in September that is focused on the Targaryen dynasty. Co-created by George R.R. Martin and Colony’s Ryan Condal and from executive producer and director Miguel Sapochnik (who directed many iconic Game of Thrones episodes including “The Battle of the Bastards” and “The Long Night”), House of the Dragon will air on HBO and HBO Max.

Condal and Sapochnik will serve as co-showrunners, while Sapochnik will direct the pilot and “additional episodes,” per a press release from HBO. Martin and Vince Gerardis will serve as executive producers.

Take a look at the logo revealed for the new series from the WarnerMedia presentation below:

The ‘Game of Thrones’ universe is so rich with stories,” HBO President Casey Bloys said in a statement. “We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan and George.”

Back in 2016, we sat down with Condal and Martin at Martin’s Jean Cocteau theater in Santa Fe, N.M where he was hosting a promotional screening of Colony. There, they talked at length about science fiction, fantasy and their relationship to each other, which feels especially relevant given this House of the Dragon news. Give it a watch below:Update 1: The Game of Thrones Fire and Blood planned spinoff series from Ryan Condal and George R.R. Martin is currently the only prequel show alive and well at HBO. The network has opted not to pick up The Longest Night pilot to series, meaning the Naomi Watts-starring project is not moving forward.

Deadline reports that the Fire and Blood Game of Thrones prequel was given the “unofficial pilot green light” back in September. Once a finished pilot is delivered to HBO, the network will review the project and determine whether they want to give it a full series order or not move forward with it.

In May 2019, Martin said there were three Game of Thrones spinoffs “moving forward nicely” at HBO, with one being the now-dead Longest Night. It’s unclear the status of the third series; at the time, Martin wrote that the two mystery shows — once of which we now know is Fire and Blood — “[remained] in the script stage, but are edging closer.”

A second Game of Thrones prequel series is reportedly in the works at HBO, according to Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter.

Both outlets are reporting that the new series is close to a pilot order. Written by Colony co-creator Ryan Condal and produced by Condal and A Song of Ice and Fire author George R. R. Martin, the potential prequel is based on Martin’s Fire and Blood, a history of the Targaryen dynasty. Set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series would reportedly focus on the dominance and decline of House Targaryen.

See which Game of Thrones characters we think deserve their own show in the video below:If this all sounds familiar, it’s because Martin has been hinting at a Fire and Blood series for some time – ever since it was announced that HBO was developing a number of prequel or companion series for Game of Thrones back in 2017. According to Deadline, this is not a sixth spinoff that is separate from the five previously announced projects, but “a brand new take on a world originally tackled by Bryan Cogman… Former GoT co-executive producer Cogman confirmed in April that his prequel idea was not going forward.”

Basically, it sounds as if Condal will be attempting a new adaptation of Fire and Blood separate from Cogman’s take on the material, resulting in a new version.

How Game of Thrones’ Main Characters’ Looks Have Changed Over the Seasons

This potential prequel joins Jane Goldman’s Game of Thrones companion show, based on the events of The Long Night and the dawn of the Age of Heroes, which was given a pilot order last June but has yet to be ordered to series. Read more about the Age of Heroes and which pivotal events Jane Goldman’s prequel series could cover; meet the cast of the prequel, led by Naomi Watts; and learn why we’ll see the Starks in the series, but not the Lannisters.
