Coronavirus crisis: Outbreak feared ‘FOUR times’ worse than Chinese authorities say

The fatal virus has killed more than 360 people and affected 17,000. A study published by the medical journal The Lancet has claimed that the number of people infected by coronavirus could be four times higher than the number given by the Chinese authorities. The study said that more than 75,000 people have been infected by coronavirus as of January 25.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared it a global health emergency.

The Lancet also said “epidemics are already growing exponentially in multiple major cities of China with a lag time behind the Wuhan outbreak of about 1–2 weeks”.

People have told the medical journal that it has been difficult to get treatment for the virus.

Amy Hu said: “I’m very dissatisfied with the government. It’s like only when the patients are close to death can they be admitted to a hospital”.

Gan Hanjiang said: “Getting treatment is so difficult. We can’t get admitted to the hospitals. And there’s not enough medicine.”

The state-run newspaper China Daily has said the government is confident it can contain the outbreak.

They said that the “entire nation has been mobilized to fight against the epidemic, with 6,097 medical professionals working in Wuhan and other places in Hubei province.”

The UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said that the virus “will be with us for at least some months to come”.

The UK government has organised evacuation flights for British nationals from Wuhan.

Scientists believe that the virus could have originated from bats.

Many countries across the world have imposed travel restrictions on Chinese nationals.

The Chinese government has accused the US of causing “panic” in its response to the deadly coronavirus outbreak.

Washington has ordered the departure of all non-emergency US personnel and their family members from the city of Wuhan in Hubei province, where the virus originated.
