Samsung’s Motorola Razr rival has leaked in full – first look at this new foldable phone

Samsung is holding a Galaxy Unpacked event on February 11 next month in San Francisco. In addition to showing off its brand spanking new Galaxy S20 series (that has been subject to copious leaks in recent weeks), the firm is also expected to unveil its next foldable phone. Most interestingly of all, it doesn’t seem as though the South Korean firm’s next pliable device will be a direct successor to the Galaxy Fold.

Samsung is gearing up to unleash its answer to the Motorola Razr. That’s right, it appears the Seoul firm is working on its own folding phone that’ll overwhelm you with nostalgia thanks to its retro flippable design. Expected to be called the Galaxy Z Flip, the device could come with more cameras and a faster processor than Motorola’s offering.

Alleged images and spec details of the Z Flip recently surfaced courtesy of WinFuture. The German outlet showed the device in what appear to be leaked press shots – Samsung’s next foldable phone is exhibited from all angles in black and lilac colours.

WinFuture claims the Galaxy Z Flip will boast a 6.7-inch 1080p display with a centred hole punch for a single front-facing camera that can be opened or closed thanks to a new hinge mechanism. The screen itself is said to have an aspect ratio of 22:9, meaning it could be taller than thinner than some of its not so pliable rivals. It’s also rumoured the display will be covered in glass and not plastic that was used for the Galaxy Fold.

Just like the revamped Motorola Razr, Samsung’s next foldable phone will purportedly come with a secondary external display that will be just over an inch in size. If true, that would make it much smaller than the almost 3-inch screen boasted by the Razr.

Much to the surprise of Android fans, Qualcomm’s newest Snapdragon 865 processor won’t be tucked inside the Galaxy Z Flip. Instead, WinFuture reports the semiconductor manufacturer’s Snapdragon 855+ will keep things ticking along.

Although the Snapdragon 855+ isn’t the fastest chipset on the market, it is still more capable than the Snapdragon 710 platform housed inside the new Motorola Razr, meaning Samsung’s device could leave it in the dust when it comes to sheer performance.

The 855+ will reportedly be accompanied by 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal memory with the option to increase storage further with a MicroSD card.

On its rear the Galaxy Z Flip is exhibited with two cameras that will reportedly carry out primary and ultra wide-angle functions. This could give Samsung’s device a notable photography advantage over the new Razr that only comes with a single standard camera.

Potentially adding further salt to Motorola’s wounds, the Galaxy Z Flip will also have a larger battery than the Razr. WinFuture says the new foldable Samsung device will have a 3,300 mAh cell compared to the more modest 2,510 mAh capacity of the Razr.

Of course, it’s expected the Z Flip will come pre-installed with Samsung’s newest One UI 2 operating system based on Android 10. The device is rumoured to be available from February 14, 2020, and retail for “around €1,500” – which translates to roughly £1263.
