WATCH: Heartbroken SNP MEPs break down in tears as bagpipes play European Union anthem

SNP MEPs were filmed breaking down in tears in Brussels after Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal was finally approved. The EU Parliament ratified the Withdrawal Agreement by 621 votes to 49 following an emotional debate. Several British MEPs said they hoped the UK would return one day although Brexiteers, including Nigel Farage, used their final speeches to tear into the EU.

Outside the Parliament, four SNP members stood hugging and comforting each other as the bagpipes were played.

Glenn Campbell, BBC Scotland’s Chief Political Correspondent, posted the video to Twitter with the caption: “Hugs and tears for the SNP Euro MPs in Brussels as Brexit deal is approved.

“Piper playing Flower of Scotland and EU anthem Ode to Joy.

“MEP Aileen McLeod in the debate appealed to the EU to ‘leave a light on’ for Scotland.”

Twitter users ruthlessly mocked the emotional outburst and accused of the MEPs of “failing Scotland”.

Paul Anderson joked that it was “a lament to lost expenses”.

One user wrote: “So utterly pathetic. Meanwhile, Scotland’s public services are in decline, but the SNP is busy having pipers play anthems and holding debates and votes on flags in the Scottish parliament. The SNP is failing Scotland.”

Another user celebrated the exit: “Yeah brilliant isn’t it! The beginning of the end of the EU gravy train!”

She continued: “Scotland is a European nation, and I look forward to an independent Scotland rejoining the EU – and we will soon.

“Playing a positive role, and promoting Europe’s values, international solidarity and cooperation, as an equal partner.

“I’m proud to have been a member of this Parliament of Europe’s citizens.

“I give you my word that Scotland’s Government will continue the protect the interests of all EU citizens who’ve chosen to make Scotland their home and have contributed to our society in so many important ways.

“And when the moment comes for Scotland to rejoin the EU, I hope this Parliament will welcome us in that same spirit of European solidarity, and in the meantime, I hope very much, that you will leave a light on for Scotland.”
