Update your iPhone now! Apple rolls-out iOS 13.3.1 upgrade with crucial bug fixes

Apple has launched the first iPhone update of the new decade. iOS 13.3.1 is a pretty hefty upgrade, clocking in at an impressive 300MB to download, Apple has included fixes for a whole raft of bugs, glitches and issues. Anyone who uses an iPhone on the O2 network in the UK should immediately download the update… and this is the explanation why.

But for everyone else, there is a lot of improvements to be found here. It should all result in a better experience on your iPhone. And it’s not just quashing glitches, Apple has also introduced a new privacy-focused feature for those with iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max which controls the location services enabled by the new U1 chipset inside the device designed to make directions and other location services inside buildings more accurate.

The U1 chip, which stands for Ultra-Wideband 1, also lets iPhone owners point their devices at one another to prioritise that person in the order on AirDrop – something that’s extremely important if you work in an office that runs on Apple devices.

The new privacy feature, which can be found in Privacy > Location Services menu within the Settings app, turns off location for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Ultra Wideband – a first for iOS. Apple added this toggle after researchers discovered that iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max continue to track users’ location even when the previous location services option was disabled. There are international regulatory requirements that require Apple to completely kill the U1 chip in certain locations.

As well as the increased control of the U1 chip, Apple has also added some smaller tweaks to improve your day-to-day experience with your iPhone. For example, there is now a “Play Again” button in the Apple TV app when rematching content you’ve seen before.
