The poll was carried out by the Washington Post and ABC News between January 20 and January 23 and involved a random national sample of 1,004 people. With the economy buoyant and voters less worried about their economic prospects, the national poll made encouraging reading for the US President. In notional general election match-ups, Trump trailed former vice-president Joe Biden with voters by four points (50 percent-46 percent).

While Vermont senator Bernie Sanders held just a two point advantage (49 percent-47 percent).

The US President has closed the gap to these leading Democrats by almost half, since a similar poll at the end of 2019.

The survey also found that Trump is running neck-and-neck with Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren, at 48 percent each.

The US President holds a three point lead over former South Bend, Indiana, mayor Pete Buttigieg (48 percent – 45 percent).

A majority of voters also increasingly believe that Trump will win a second term as President in November.

Asked who they thought would win the White House, 49 percent said Trump, while only 43 percent backed a Democrat.

Trump’s improved standing in the latest poll is partly down to the growing support of independents for the president.

Independent voters could prove crucial in swing states.

The US President is charged with abusing the power of his office for political gain and for then obstructing Congress in its investigation.

Democrats insist that they are trying to uphold the Constitution and defend the principles of US democracy in their pursuit of impeachment.

However, a leading US political commentator told this website that impeachment had nothing to do with law and order.

John Cardillo, TV political chat show host described the he entire impeachment process as a form of political show trial where there are no rules.

In an exclusive interview with the Express.co.uk, he said: “There are no rules and you see that in the House hearings.

“The Democrats don’t want set rules and parameters because this isn’t about right and wrong, this isn’t about law and order.

“This is about removing Donald Trump by any means possible because they know politically they can’t beat him in 2020.

“And those really are the politics behind it. It’s a way to ensure a Democrat win in 2020, but I think it is backfiring ethically.

“I think if anything this is motivating Trump’s base and is causing Democrats to migrate over to the Republican Party.”
