Mean Girls is being made AGAIN – Musical to be turned into movie 15 years after original

Mean Girls writer Tina Fey has announced she will be turning the Broadway musical into a new movie over 15 years after the comedy was originally released. Mean Girls established itself as a cult teen phenomenon back in 2004, with the movie starring Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfriend and Lacey Chabert. It has become an anchor for countless pop culture references and is infinitely quotable.

In 2017, Fey took the power of Mean Girls to the stage with a musical based on the movie.

It premiered in Washington and opened on Broadway the following year.

Now, Fey is set to turn the musical adaptation into a movie of its own.

“I’m very excited to bring Mean Girls back to the big screen,” Fey said in a statement via Variety.

“It’s been incredibly gratifying to see how much the movie and the musical have meant to audiences.

“I’ve spent 16 years with these characters now,” she continued. “They are my Marvel Universe and I love them dearly.”

“We’re thrilled to be bringing this iconic property back to the big screen in musical form with our incredible filmmaking team.”

The movie of the musical will see Fey working once again with composer and lyricist Jeff Richmond, who is also her husband.

“We are all excited to continue to work with Sonia Friedman and her team as we prepare for London,” he added.

Mean Girls the musical is expected to hit the stage in London next year.

Fans were divided over the news of a new Mean Girls movie, with one tweeting: “Mean Girls was the first show I ever got to see on Broadway and I adored it. I’m super excited that this is happening!”

“I’m gonna defend this movie at all costs because we stan Mean Girls until the very end,” another said.

A third, meanwhile, quipped: “I hope they call it Mean Girls The Movie The Musical The Movie.”

“Mean girls becoming the new Hairspray with the ‘movie > stage musical > movie musical’ trajectory is a flex I really didn’t see coming,” another agreed.

Others were less impressed, as one said: “Irritating that it hasn’t even been 15 years since Mean Girls first came out and they’re already planning to make it again… just with songs this time…”

“This seems unnecessary??” a second chipped in.
