Victoria Derbyshire ‘absolutely devastated’ as BBC show axed without her knowledge

It was announced yesterday that the weekday current affairs programme was being taken off the air after five years. BBC presenter Victoria Derbyshire, 51, has today taken to Twitter to break her silence and admitted she is “gutted”.

In view of her 101,000 followers, the TV journalist shared a lengthy message where she confessed to being “absolutely devastated” by the news.

She wrote: “Absolutely devastated at the plan to end our programme (which I first learned about in yesterday’s Times).

“I’m unbelievably proud of what our team and our show have achieved in under 5 years…breaking tonnes of original stories (which we were asked to do); attracting a working class, young, diverse audience that BBC radio & TV news progs just don’t reach (which we were asked to do); & smashing the digital figures (which we were asked to do).”(sic)

Victoria added: “I’m gutted particularly for our brilliant, young, ambitious, talented team – love ‘em. And for all those people we gave a voice to. Love them too.”

Express.co.uk has contacted a spokesperson for the BBC asking for comment.

It comes after news broke The Victoria Derbyshire Show has been cancelled by the BBC due to the costs of producing the current affairs programme, according to a post on Twitter yesterday by Media Editor at BBC News Amol Rajan.

Amol, who also presents shows on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio 2, tweeted: “The Victoria Derbyshire Show is coming off air. I understand @BBCNews is committed to Victoria and the (award-winning) journalism of the show.

“Cost of doing it on linear channel when savings are needed deemed too high. BBC declined to comment ahead of an announcement next week.”

 

“It’s madness. #VictoriaLIVE consistently breaks huge stories, has won countless awards including a BAFTA and has broken new ground. Plus it has an outstanding team and presenter.”

Celebrity pals and fans have inundated Victoria with messages to express their sadness of the show being taken off air.

Former Homes Under The Hammer star Lucy Alexander wrote: “Gutted for you. Amazing show. Loved watching you. Very honest and real.”

Channel 5 presenter Sian Williams commented: “I’m really sorry Victoria. Good show with a great team – the manner in which you found out is shocking.”

A social media user tweeted: “You and the team should be proud of what you’ve produced over the years.”

Another person commented: “So sorry. I was on the prog as a guest It was very professional, you did a lovely interview, and made us all feel at home.”

While a third person added: “You’ve done an amazing job with an amazing team and I hope something comes from this for each and every one of you.”

Victoria was pictured today leaving the BBC studios in London today.
