Twitch streamer BadBunny has blasted viewer donations in an outburst which has gone viral. BadBunny is a regular in the Just Chatting section of Twitch and is approaching the 100,000 followers marker. During a broadcast on January 18 BadBunny explained that to continue creating content for Twitch she needed monetary support.
But when viewers didn’t respond with an influx of subscriptions the Twitch streamer lashed out.
In a clip that has now gone viral BadBunny said: “How did my whole speech about how I need subscribers to get the stream going, blah blah blah, result in zero subscribers?
“There are regulars here. $5 a month! How do you have hours of time to watch me, and not $5?
“What are you doing with your life where you have hours of time to watch Twitch, and not $5 to provide for the content that you’re watching.”
“I have a wall of non-subscribers. This is actually, f****** really heartbreaking because it’s like people really have no respect for me as a content creator.”
The clip later went viral, with those on social media debating how asking sub for donations – which is commonplace – is acceptable.
Some felt the backlash to BadBunny’s outburst was an overreaction while others felt the Twitch streamer was acting “entitled”.
In the latter camp was fellow Twitch streamer BigELive who tweeted: “IS THIS S*** REAL?!
“I know we meme a lot about s***, but this type of attitude is complete trash.
“No one owes you S*** in this world. NEVER be this self centered gang”.
While popular Twitch streamers such as Dr Disrespect and Tfue also responded to BadBunny’s comments.
Referencing BadBunny’s comments in a broadcast, Dr Disrespect said: “I’ve been live for almost 10 minutes now.
“And there is not enough people subbing to the channel. If people are going to watch me for free, you better line up the contracts.
“I don’t work for free!”
While in a stream Tfue also referenced BadBunny’s comments saying: “I’ve been streaming 40 f****** hours a day, and you guys are not giving me five f****** dollars!”
“I’m teaching you how to play the game, teaching you how to play controller, and you guys aren’t even giving me your money?! I’m literally heartbroken.”
However, as reported in a post by Dexerto, another channel has leapt to the support of BadBunny.
Twitch channel Central_Committee has claimed the backlash directed towards BadBunny is sexist.
They said: “I know it’s sexist, because nobody else gets called out like this. No man gets called out for this.
“Women get called out for this. It’s so blatantly obvious.
“The reason this is getting retweeted and liked so much, is because she’s an attractive woman, who didn’t act like a nice person.”
However, as Dexerto points out, male streamers have been criticised in the past for similar views.
Last year GrossGore was criticised after threatening to ban viewers who did not subscribe.
