13-year-old boy dies after falling through icy pond in New Jersey

A 13-year-old teen died Wednesday evening after he fell through the ice on a pond in East Brunswick, New Jersey.

According to ABC7, it took rescue workers nearly an hour to pull the teen out of the ice-cold water. Reports say three kids were playing on the pond near Civic Center Drive around 5 p.m. when they all fell in.

“Temperatures there this evening were in the upper 20’s, which is below freezing. However, over the past several days temperatures there have been cold enough at night to generate some ice, dropping into the teens,” AccuWeather Meteorologist said.

“However, daytime highs have been in the 30s and even close to 40 degrees, so developing ice that would’ve been thick enough to safely walk on would have been very difficult,” Witt said.

Two of the teens were able to get themselves out of the cold water and called 911, while one of the teens became trapped.

Six officers formed a human chain to try and rescue the teen, but police say he slipped under the ice, ABC7 reports.

The fire department then arrived and rescued the teen and gave him CPR. He was taken to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The boy was pronounced dead at 7:45 p.m. EST Wednesday night according to a statement from East Brunswick officials.

There was another separate incident on Wednesday night of a group of teens falling through an icy pond just 30 minutes away in Middlesex County in a town called Carteret. Police and firefighters were able to rescue all of the teens in that incident and no injuries have been reported.
