A Fall From Grace ending explained: What happens? Is Grace guilty?

A Fall From Grace stars Crystal Fox as Grace, who is accused of killing her husband in shocking circumstances. The film also features young lawyer Jasmine (played by Bresha Webb), who is cynical of Grace’s sweet, mild-mannered way, but twists and turns prove there is far more than meets the eye. But how does the film end, did Grace actually kill her husband and is she found guilty?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from A Fall From Grace

A Fall From Grace has been called a disjointed film, if critics are to be believed, so the plot may become a little slippery in its retelling.

To begin, the opening scene sees a cop dealing with a horrific moment in his job – how he can’t stop an elderly woman from jumping off her roof.

He comes home to his wife, Jasmine, who it turns out is the real focus of the story which is set to unfold.

Jasmine is the lawyer who is next seen speaking with her new client, Grace, who is a divorcee who has been charged with the murder of her younger husband, Shannon (Mehcad Brooks).

She asks Grace about her marriage, sensing something is not quite right and there is more to the story, so Grace begins to speak out about her relationship with Shannon.

At this point, we enter the second of the two timelines which are featured in the film, which shows seven years before, when Grace explains how her husband left her for his secretary.

Then, her friend Sarah (Phylicia Rashad) suggested she visit a gallery opening, and here she met Shannon who made her feel better about her difficult life.

He proposed and she accepted, however their quick romance was certainly not always a happy one.

As Grace tells her story, Jasmine is seen in the present day, visiting the jail and talking to her husband and boss (the latter of whom is played by Tyler Perry) before she visits Sarah, Grace’s friend, and sees a slightly odd sight of someone wandering behind a door.

Grace’s story comes full circle and explores how she was fired from her job for stealing from an account she managed, following which she discovered her bank accounts are overdrawn and she has had a mortgage taken out in her name.

She realised Shannon was conning her, and on returning home found him having sex with a younger woman in their bedroom.

After the woman left, Shannon told her his horrific plan, at which point she picked up a baseball bat and beat him.

She left and told her friend Sarah she had killed him, only to return and find his body mysteriously missing.

In the present, Jasmine believes she is innocent, and Shannon may not even be dead, but the court decides otherwise and Grace IS found guilty of murder, partly after her friend Sarah says Grace confessed to the murder on the night Shannon’s body went missing.

As Grace leaves the courtroom, she sees Sarah is wearing the same necklace Shannon wore on the gallery opening, and suddenly has flashbacks of Sarah and Shannon sharing some intimate moments.

Grace is convinced Sarah is involved and calls for her lawyer, but Jasmine is walking towards Sarah’s house, and sees an elderly woman leaving the property.

She resists being brought back when Jasmine asks, and as Jasmine tries to get her back to the house, she reveals she wants to go to her home – at the same address where Shannon has taken out a mortgage.

Jasmine realises there is something suspicious going on, and on searching the house, find a basement with at least a dozen elderly people chained up.

She also realises the elderly woman who her husband saw die was one of Sarah’s victims, but before she can do anything, a mysterious figure drags her away.

When Sarah comes home to find Jasmine tied up in the basement, it is revealed the figure is Shannon, who is Sarah’s son and with whom she has conned older people for years.

Jasmine’s husband, meanwhile, notices Sarah is a wanted woman and quickly goes to her home, worried for Jasmine.

Sarah keeps him out, but he calls Jasmine’s phone to try and find her, and on discovering she is definitely in the house, fights Sarah and Shannon.

He kills Shannon and frees Jasmine and the other women, after which Grace is also free while Sarah escapes.

The final scene sees Sarah offering her services as a carer to an elderly woman, who was working for a “financial institution,” so it looks as though Sarah will continue getting up to her old tricks.

The plot may be mad, but the ending is at least happy.

And while Grace is named guilty by the court, she is eventually pardoned and freed, meaning ultimately she gets the truth out in the open.
