Smash Bros Ultimate: First Fighters Pass 2 character teased, major Switch surprise

Smash Bros Ultimate fans have had a busy week, with the Fighters Pass 5 character announced as well as details on the second season emerging. On Thursday Smash Bros director Masahiro Sakurai confirmed that the final character for the first Fighters Pass will be Fire Emblem’s Byleth. Byleth is the main protagonist for Fire Emblem Three Houses and will be adding to the already strong FE representation in Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

It was also confirmed that as an extra bonus Cuphead will be joining the roster as a Mii Fighter costume in SSBU.

The news was revealed in a Smash Direct on Thursday which also announced the first details on the second Fighters Pass for the Nintendo Switch game.

Whereas the first Fighters Pass brought with it five new fighters, the second Fighters Pass will bring with it six new brawlers for the hit Switch game.

No details have been revealed on who will be getting added to Smash in Fighters Pass volume 2 but speculation is already mounting.

Surely some of the characters that fans have long demanded will make an appearance in the next Smash Bros Ultimate Fighters Pass.

Waluigi is undoubtedly the top choice for fans while other popular choices would be Devil May Cry’s Dante, Kingdom Heart’s Sora and Crash Bandicoot.

But the first character for Smash Bros Ultimate Fighters Pass 2 may just have been teased, and it’s likely to surprise fans.

In the aftermath of the Smash Direct Game Awards mastermind Geoff Keighley took to Twitter.

He posted a screengrab from the Smash Direct which shows the Smash invitation envelope.

Alongside this image was the message ‘even more fighters in development’.

Keighley tweeted this picture and added: “Ludens Fan will be checking the mail!”

Fans have been left wondering if this is a sign that Death Stranding could be getting a representative in Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

Ludens Fan is the name of the character Keighley voices in the PS4 exclusive that’s directed by MGS visionary Hideo Kojima.

The tweet has left fans wondering if this is a hint Death Stranding hero Sam Porter Bridges could be making his way to Smash.

Responding to the tweet one fan posted: “Sam Porter Bridges: delivering the package!!”

Another wrote: “What do you know that we don’t know?”

And one added: “SAM PORTER BRIDGES DELIVERS SOME PUNCHES”.

The tweet comes after Keighley had tweeted a few days before the Smash Direct: “Just got an insanely cool call about something.”

Fans had thought this was a sign that Keighley would be presenting the rumoured upcoming PS5 reveal.

But maybe the call instead was about a Death Stranding character featuring in Smash?

Keighley is friends with Death Stranding creator Kojima, who himself is also friends with Smash director Sakurai.

Sakurai previously visited the Kojima Productions headquarters in Tokyo while Death Stranding was still in development.

Kojima’s most famous character, Solid Snake, already features in Smash – so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see his newest hero also join SSBU.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate fans will be able to pre-purchase the latest Fighters Pass, dubbed volume 2, when pre-orders open on January 28.
