Flight secrets: Cabin crew reveal how they found love onboard flights

In a recent Reddit thread, one unnamed flight attendant shared her romance story, revealing she met her husband while they were both working. “I’m actually marrying a pilot! We started on the same day at work.”

She revealed that for her soon-to-be husband, it was love at first sight – however, she didn’t quite feel the same at the start.

“Initially he was just a work mate at first, then we started hanging out of work as friends for several months.

“The next day I just woke up realising that I can’t live my life without him,” she shared.

“He came into my life unexpectedly, it never crossed my mind to date someone from work but I fell really hard and in a couple of months we’re getting married.”

The unidentified user added that she found it helps to be with someone who understands her work scheduling, adding that “this is not a 9-5 office job.”

“It’s just a case of understanding each other’s schedule and trusting one another. We met while working the same flight and it’s been a bumpy road trying to see each other and communicate with our crazy schedules but we make it work. I imagine if we didn’t find each other I’d probably still be single. It’s hard to date as a flight attendant.”

While some do manage to find partners in their field, one flight attendant warned that dating colleagues can be “tricky.”

Heather Poole, author of Cruising Attitude, shared that cabin crew spend a lot of their time on aircrafts and flying all over the globe and this can result in a negative knock-on effect when it comes to personal relationships.

“A relationship with a flight attendant can be tricky,” Poole wrote, “because being a flight attendant isn’t just a job it’s a lifestyle.”

Poole added that dating outside of your cabin crew circle is equally difficult.

“No matter how many times we try to explain it, most people have a hard time really grasping that the only thing consistent about our lifestyle is just how inconsistent it truly is.

“Our schedules are always changing, making it difficult to create long-term plans with loved ones.

“We work odd hours and rarely get holidays and weekends off. We’re away from home for days at a time, and a lot of that time is spent at hotels with colleagues of the opposite sex.

“There aren’t a lot of people who can handle that. This is especially true for those involved before their flight attendant career began.

Poole said that her lifestyle is often too difficult for most men to deal with.

“Nine times out of ten, imaginations get the best of those left on the ground.”

Pilots and the idea that the vast majority are incredibly good looking and eligible also poses a big threat for many partners back home.

“They think that all pilots look like Hugh Jackman instead of Danny DeVito, and that all the passengers seated in first class are trying to lure us onto their private islands with promises of champagne and caviar,” said Poole.

“Soon loneliness turns to jealousy and jealousy leads to frustration or anger.

“In the end, a person can only take so much and eventually someone will break up.It’s either break up or quit flying.”
