Dragon Ball Z Kakarot Review UPDATE: Bad News for anime fans

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, the latest game based on the legendary anime franchise, finally launches today on PC, PS4 and Xbox One – and it’s sure to be popular.

This action RPG is the first big release of the year (and a new decade), and fans will no doubt be looking forward to flying through the air as Goku and battling classic enemies like Vegeta, Cell, and Frieza.

With a heavy focus on levelling up Goku and completing side quests before jumping into the series’ most famous battles, Kakarot looks to be one of the biggest Dragon Ball titles yet – with the game apparently between 35 and 40 hours long, with over double that for completionists.

it has a lot to live up to, as well – with the franchise’s last outing, Dragon Ball Fighterz, winning Best Fighting Game at the Game Awards 2018.

Despite it being launch day, you may have noticed that the game’s very respectable 78 Metacritic score is made up of fewer reviews than other big titles. As reported by IGN, there was a delay in receiving review copies of the game, meaning many reviews won’t be fully complete until over the weekend or early next week.

Expect plenty of in-progress impressions in time for the embargo, but don’t expect fully scored reviews in time for launch.

Speaking of launch, the game is also getting a hefty Day One patch – 11GB to be precise. The update improves loading times, tweaks fast travel, and makes adjustments to the in-game economy while also adding new side quests.

The first Dragon Ball Z game since the excellent FighterZ (not including the Switch exclusive card game Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission), Kakarot is named after lead character Goku’s previous name on his home planet.

There’s a reason for that – as with many other games in the series history, Kakarot focuses on Goku’s story as it was told in the anime, except this time more context is being added to events by showing events from alternate perspectives.
