Koalas on the brink: Panic as Australia fires force adorable animals closer to extinction

At the country’s biggest koala hospital, all four beds are in use, according to the Mirror. The beds have been in full use the last few of months.

In the hospital, signs are up asking visitors not to make any noise, as to not disturb the poorly koalas.

The bears have been traumatised and severely burnt after the wildfires which have ravaged Australia.

Now experts have claimed the animal is now on the verge on extinction.

The hospital has set up an appeal, which currently stands at £3 million.

Things are desperate at the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital in New South Wales, a treatment centre that sits 300 miles north of Sydney.

The 45-year-old clinical director Scott Castle, who originates from Basildon, Essex, said that he gives names to the portly creatures.

“This one, Nabiac Austin, was very badly burned,” said Scott, pointing at one of the animals up a tree.

“This mum and her joey, Bilpin Janet and Bilpin Jarrod, were brought in from the fire grounds.”

He added: “The bushfires have been devastating.

“So many koalas have died.

“We are trying hard to save as much wildlife as possible, and we are hoping to get as many back into the wild as we can, as soon as their habitat is restored.”

British volunteer Susan McInnes spoke about working at the hospital.

The 55-year-old, of Bangor, Co Down, said: “The hospital does amazing work with the injured and burnt koalas.

“It’s been so sad to see so many coming in but great that they are treated so well and so many recover because of the treatment they receive.

“I’m a volunteer here and I’m very privileged to play a very small part.

“The whole hospital is an absolute credit to Australia.”

Australia’s Susan Ley recently stated that the animal was now on the brink of dying out.

She said that because of the fires, the koalas had taken “an extraordinary hit” during the course of the last three months.

In fact, the Oz Ministers travelled to Port Macquarie, such was their concern.

They wanted to see the hospital’s brilliant work.

The fires continues to ruin Australia’s land.

But the hospital staff members continue to do what they can for the koalas.
