Nearly one week after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle shocked the world by announcing they were stepping back as senior members of the royal family – a scandal known as Megxit – Markle has made her first public appearance. The 38-year-old Duchess of Sussex visited the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre in Vancouver on Tuesday to drink some tea and discuss the issues affecting women in the community.
The women’s center posted a pic on Facebook of Markle’s visit, and wrote in the caption, “Look who we had tea with today! The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, visited us today to discuss issues affecting women in the community.”

According to the center’s website, the Downtown Eastside is “well-known within Vancouver and even across Canada for its disproportionate levels of poverty and extreme marginalization.” The center advocates for women in the community, and also provides meals and counseling.
This is the first time Markle has made a public appearance since the Megxit announcement, however she has yet to make a public statement about her and Harry’s decision. On January 8th, the couple issued a statement via Instagram about their plans to “carve out a progressive new role” within the royal family.
Hours after the announcement, Markle flew back to Canada to be with the couple’s son, Archie Harrison. Meanwhile, Prince Harry has stayed behind in the UK to work things out with Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, and Prince William.

They met on Monday for the “Megxit Summit” to discuss Harry and Meghan’s future with the royal family, and the Queen issued a statement after the meeting to voice her support for the couple.
An insider told E! News, that Markle has been driving herself around Vancouver Island in a Range Rover to run errands. But, she’s mostly laid low in a wealthy friend’s mansion with baby Archie.
“She has gone for a drive around town and to pick up someone at the airport that looked like her mom,” the source said.
Another insider told Us Weekly that Meghan was spotted this past weekend running errands, and at one point was in “a drug store parking lot.”
Prince Harry is expected to fly to Canada to be with his wife and son by the end of the week.
