Oscars nominations 2020 date: When are the Oscar nominations announced?

The Golden Globes gave out their awards to some memorable people – with Joaquin Phoenix, Renee Zellweger and Taron Egerton among winners. Often, people suggest the Golden Globes is a precursor for The Oscars in terms of who it selects to take home a gong. But when are the Oscar nominations announced and can UK viewers see it?

How can UK viewers watch the Oscars nominations 2020?

The Oscars 2020 nominations are available to stream online via the Academy Awards’ official website, as well as on their social media accounts.

As well as this, many media outlets are expected to be reporting on the nominations as they takes place, meaning fans can likely tune in to any news channel to watch it there, or at least find out the nominees.

The Academy often follows in the footsteps of the Golden Globes, so names like Awkwafina, Saoirse Ronan, Quentin Tarantino, Brad Pitt and Laura Dern are likely to be in the mix.

Who won a Golden Globe – will they be nominated for an Oscar?

The likelihood is many of those who won a Golden Globe – or were nominated – will be seen again in the list for The Oscars.

However, one big difference between the ceremonies may make this a little bit difficult – there is a whole extra group of categories in the Golden Globes.

Rather than having one Best Film or Best Actress, the Golden Globes chose instead to split up the nominations between drama and musical/comedy performances and movies.

As a result, there will be some people who are left out, while others will be seen once again in the list.

The likely names to be seen again are the winners, which included Brad Pitt, Awkwafina, Taron Egerton, Joaquin Phoenix, Renee Zellweger and Laura Dern, who all won acting gongs at the Golden Globes.

Similarly, director Quentin Tarantino, director Sam Mendes and the makers of South Korean film Parasite will all likely be in the running for their movies.

However, with some other awards at the Oscars unaccounted for, such as Best Original Song and the two screenplay prizes (the Golden Globes only has one screenplay prize) it may mean some people get a shot who were shunned previously.

When is The Oscars 2020 ceremony?

The nominations will be a precursor for the ceremony itself, which will be on February 9, starting at 5pm (PT)

This means, for UK viewers operating on GMT, the ceremony begins at 11.30pm.

How can UK viewers watch The Oscars ceremony?

The Oscars will be shown in the USA on ABC, and last year UK viewers were able to tune in via Sky Cinema and NOW TV.

Last year, the Oscars’ All Access: Red Carpet Live was also streamed live on Twitter exclusively, while the E! UK Twitter page also hosted their own coverage.

At present, it has not been confirmed whether a UK broadcaster will show the ceremony, but it is likely most UK broadcasters will at least have highlights to show on the morning after.

The Oscar nominations will be released on January 13, ahead of the ceremony on February 9
