PS4 news: PlayStation reveal great new release for free game fans

Free PS4 game fans will have the chance to download the latest addition to the Free-to-play genre later this week. Plans for this latest launch were announced back in December, but we now have a firm release date for when this new experience will be available on the PlayStation Store. And it’s great news for gamers who don’t have a PS Plus subscription as this new PS4 game will not require one.

Players will notice that on Thursday, January 16, 2020, The Darwin Project will become available to download on PS4 and PS4 Pro.

Developer Scavengers Studio has already launched the free-to-play Battle Royale game on PC and Xbox One, and the release on PS4 will complete their plans.

Having been in early access on other platforms, the Darwin Project will be available to download for free on Xbox One, PC and PS4, starting on January 16.

As mentioned above, the Darwin Project is a Battle Royale game that pits players against each other until only one remains.

But it comes with some pretty big changes to the usual gameplay associated with the popular subgenre.

Unlike in Fortnite and PUBG, the Darwin Project is on a much smaller scale, with only ten gamers going head-to-head in each match.

It features a match based in Canada that draws a lot of gameplay factors from the surrounding cold and harsh wilderness.

And it also comes with a match overseer, who can help change the flow of each encounter and even drop public votes to see what happens next.

“Darwin Project is a Battle Royale game that features 10 inmates fighting for fame and fortune in a gladiator-style Arena somewhere deep in the post-apocalyptic Canadian Rockies, where not only will you have to fight the other inmates in the Arena, but the harshness of Canadian winters as well,” a message from Scavengers Studio explains.

“Each Inmate (that’s you!) will enter the Arena equipped with both a battle-ready Axe and Bow that best suits your style, and Corporation-Sponsored high-tech Gear of your choice that will augment your combat capabilities and hopefully give you the edge needed to claim victory over other players, and nature itself.

“Let’s not forget the ever-watchful eye of the Show Director, an overseer of the Arena who acts as the host of the show, causing chaos wherever they may go with an assortment of abilities such as dropping Nukes, creating oceans of Lava, or even helping inmates by granting them health and resources.”

Anyone who is interested in checking out the Battle Royale action before launch can find plenty of videos and examples of how matches run on YouTube and Twitch.

The good news for the Darwin Project is that the PlayStation will open the game up to tons of new potential fans.

The downside being that there are already a lot of free-to-play games available already to download and play.

Dauntless, Genesis and World of Warships are just a few of the free games available on PS4 in 2020.

But there’s no reason to believe that Darwin Project can’t carve out its own niche among Realm Royale, Fortnite Battle Royale and Apex Legends this year.
