Netflix outrage: Brazil bans film on streaming channel that depicts Jesus as gay

Angered Christians in the country created a petition lobbying for Netflix to take down the film that shows Jesus bringing a boyfriend home to meet his family. However the ban for now seems to only be a temporary measure, in a ruling by a judge it was outlined, “The right to freedom of expression is not absolute.”

Meaning that there is every opportunity that the ban could be overturned.

The film that causes such furore in Brazil, was created by Brazilian YouTube comedy group Porta dos Fundos.

On Christmas eve a group attacked Porta dos Fundo’s office n Rio de Janeiro with fire bombs.

A man who is said to be involved in the attack has fled to Russia to escape Interpol who have a warrant to arrest him.

It comes after homophobic comments have previously been issued by Brazil’s far-right president Jair Bolsonaro

Whose slogan for his campaign was “Brazil before everything, and God before all.”

“To unite the people, rescue the family, respect religions and our Judeo-Christian tradition, combat gender ideology, conserving our values.”

He has also faced criticism for his derogatory comments against the LGBTQ community.

“If I see two men kissing in the street, I will hit them.”

In a Playboy magazine in 2011 Bolsonaro said “I would not be able to love a gay son I would rather he die in an accident.”

Furthermore he has claimed that having a daughter would be a “weakness.”

On a radio program in 2016 Bolsonaro is quoted as saying that the error of dictatorship has been “to torture and not to kill.”

In an angry tweet posted online Bolsonaro’s son, Eduardo, said the Netflix film was “garbage”

“It does not represent Brazilian society.”
